TDD602 Final Major

My projects have always features sustainability, concluding with my dissertation and final major project, which jointly explore the sustainability of menstrual products. My dissertation ‘Sanity or Sanitary’ explores the world of menstrual taboos and reusable period products, which has inspired my final major project WHAT IF IT WASN’T WASTE. At the projects core, it is about education and empowerment of women to be able to maker better choice about their menstrual products both for the environment and for their bodies. The artefact pieces presents for my final major show case the range of skills I have developed over the course of my

studies at Plymouth and my passion for high quality making. I have always had a passion for design and making, but I have always loved art galleries and the acceptance that can be found in them for a plethora of contrasting styles and mediums. The presentation of work heavily influences my styles of presentation, within which I like to allow the work and images to speak louder than my words. Enough said I think...

Corset

The corset became a focal point of the display because of the tactile attraction of the material and contrasting colours of the white and dark blue. I feel the level of skill it shows is high and the tailoring, material and finish reflect the high standards I am able to achieve as a maker. It is made from 10 self-drafted pattern pieces, and the self-produced tampon paper material. It is a speculative design piece to demonstrating the volume of material that is used and/or wasted in the products we are expected to use to manage a period.  This is connected to the projects origins of understanding how menstrual products should be disposed of.

Objects

The collection of objects supports the other elements of the display by provide a tactile, interactive element into it. Because they can be handled, they connect the sense of scale in time, to the value of material used, in a visual and understandable manner. They all have the same design theme which is echoed throughout the items that make up the display, which has helped to keep them integrated and relatable to the display, highlighting the relevant information.
